Garrett's Story

Hi

Garrett Mendez is a young stroke survivor from New Jersey. He has just launched his personal web page to increase awareness and educate about stroke.

Garrett wrote:

"I am twenty three years old and a stroke survivor. I had no risk factors, no warning signs. On November 26, 2005, my life changed in the blink of an eye. Four years ago, I was a freshman at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass. I had a pretty typical life. I was having a great time in college, I was playing hockey on a Junior Hockey team. Sports had always been an important part of my life. I learned to skate soon after I learned to walk and had played hockey since I was four."

Fruits and Vegies in your diet can be an adventure...

Sometimes we can get too set in our ways or are intimidated to try new things, especially when it comes to food. Take a look around your grocery store, visit an ethnic food shop, health-food outlet or stroll through your local farmers’ market for new vegetables, fruit and other foods you’ve never tried before. You can find recipes for almost anything from artichokes to tofu by searching the web, going to libraries or buying new cookbooks.

Your Reticular Activating System acts as a heat seeking missile which allows your subconscious mind to work on your goal whether you realize it or not.

Jim is walking from the Kitchen into the Family Room about 3 weeks after receiving his Walk Aide device. He's gone from only being able to go about 5' by himself without assistive devices to now going about 28 feet (on average), sits for a minute and then goes 25-28 feet again -- during a physical therapy session. His speed has increased impressively as well. We can't really ask for more!

Stroke Recovery Goals

Hi

I call it pushing the envelope...gently. lol

I am posting a video from Jill the GoalGuru to help you understand why it is so important to set goals in stroke recovery. Physical goals, mental goals and benchmark goals, all kinds of goals.

Then as Jill says, "go for it!"

You see Jill overcame her fear and climbed the tower. (to the top) At the end of the video says that she climbed it three more times that day.

Jill said, after reaching her goal of climbing the tower then she felt like she wanted to climb something higher and bigger.

This metaphor can be applied to stroke recovery Our goal may not be as lofty at first but the same principals apply.

Set your stroke recovery goals and climb your stroke recovery tower. then do it again and again and again. Keep pushing the envelope gently!

Make stroke recovery your daily routine. (watch the video as many times as you need to...thanks Jill)
